Although a last minute entry to the Midlands Business Insider International Trade Awards in the Rapid Export Growth category, BanaBay was clearly identified as a major contender.
A mere 2 years ago the idea to market bananas grown on family owned plantations in Ecuador under the brand name BanaBay was born between two logistics colleagues; as BanaBay’s MD Mark O’Sullivan explains:
“We knew to survive in the highly competitive banana world we would need to be different so we came up with the concept of direct sourcing where the as the grower we could manage the entire supply chain to deliver quality and value to the end customer.”
This special relationship BanaBay has with its customers has led to impressive growth. Having started out in late 2012 exporting one container of bananas a week to the UK, the business now sends 120 containers a week worldwide and has extended its tropical fruit portfolio to include Organic and Fairtrade bananas as well as plantains and pineapples.
Meanwhile the BanaBay team has grown to 15 staff in the Birmingham office and the establishing of US and China based operations. To drive the business forward and effectively communicate with customers around the globe the young and dynamic team speaks a broad range of languages including English, Spanish, Italian, Mandarin, German, Russian, Lithuanian and Polish.
The Awards which attracted over 150 Midlands entries culminated in a sparkling awards event at the Metropole Hotel in Birmingham on 9th October, 2014.
